Xcel Leisure Centre
Coventry Sports Foundation
Xcel is a new-build community facility and the flagship project of a council-led regeneration plan for the Canley area of Coventry. The client is a charitable trust that provides a wide range of leisure activities to disadvantaged groups.
The building has a high percentage of users with disabilities, so demonstrates best practice in inclusive design. Stakeholders and community groups were widely consulted at briefing stage through events, exhibitions and canvassing. In addition to excellent accessibility, they prioritised sustainability, security and long-term maintenance. The building is operational from 6am-10.30pm and has external pitches.
Xcel has a strong, simple, rational plan over the two floors. An emphasis on connectivity promotes an inclusive experience for users of all abilities. Accommodation comprises a range of general and specialist facilities, including a high-tech swimming pool with moveable floor.
The lower level is split into wet and dry zones and has a 25m pool, health suite, changing village, crèche and four court sports hall. The upper level has fitness suites, studios, function rooms (that can be merged) and offices. A full-height atrium provides a visual link between floors and incorporates a ground floor café bar. There is a covered external courtyard above.
