The City of Edinburgh Council vision prior to the planning of new Headquarters was ‘to be the most successful and sustainable city region in Northern Europe by 2015’.

The design therefore incorporates maximum sustainable content in every aspect of the project. In tandem with this imperative was the requirement to achieve the Council’s other key objective which was to build an open and transparent change culture to incorporate the most progressive work practices.

It is built on a brownfield site and has created an impetus for the development of the eastern end of Edinburgh’s commercial and civic heart. Over the next five years, major planned developments for business, residential and public space will transform the area. Employment across central Scotland increased during the construction and fitting phases, and the release of many city centre properties previously occupied by the council has encouraged redevelopment and economic vitality.

The vibrant atmosphere of the building, encouraging social and business interaction together with practical resources, including a gym and cycle-related facilities, have given a boost to staff wellbeing.
