Pinewood Infant School

This £3.2 million project is a 90 place infant school with a 24 place pre-school serving a large residential development. The original school building was the subject of an arson attack in March 2004.

The accommodation comprises three classrooms, a resource provision for language impairment; a 24 place Early Years Unit; administration accommodation; a central resource library; a 120m2 hall; a music/drama room and ancillary accommodation.
The block that survived the arson attack was stripped back to its frame and remodelled. The new accommodation is arranged in three linear forms perpendicular to it, creating a multi-use courtyard.

A brick plinth to the primary linear blocks provides a juxtaposition with the verticality of the pine trees on the site. The natural slate roofs then sit astride the brick bases, the gables are recessed and clad with sealed sweet chestnut and the verges of the gables are clad with lead. The three blocks are connected with a lower flat roofed area that is fully glazed to the courtyard.
