Green End Primary School
In 2004 Willmott Dixon entered into a five year framework agreement with Manchester City Council which embraced partnering principles.
This project was the first new-build school awarded, bringing an infant and junior school together in one new primary. It presented a formidable challenge, which included difficult access to a site surrounded by a Roman Catholic school, large secondary school, church, and busy street.
An extensive value engineering exercise was undertaken, reducing the initial cost plan of £5.2 million down to an AMP of £4.6 million.
A key feature of the scheme was the inclusion of sustainability features, including rain water harvesting, natural ventilation, cedar cladding and installation of sun pipes and photovoltaic units.
The project was completed early and with a saving of £100,000 on the original target cost. In addition, the outstanding quality of the project was recognised at the 2006 Chartered Institute of Architect Technologist awards with the architects, Robinsons, receiving a highly commended award, nominated for a SCALA Civic Building of the Year award and also included a government presentation postcard.
