As Europe’s Oil Capital, Aberdeen, ‘The Granite City’, is a dynamic modern city but it retains its history, traditions and values, with 18th and 19th Century buildings presenting a strong physical image. An integral part of the fabric and culture is the 1906 Frank Matcham designed ‘His Majesty’s Theatre’, now a category ‘A’ listed building.

Situated to the north end of Union Terrace Gardens, the theatre, regarded as the premier venue for the performing arts in the North East of Scotland, enjoys a magnificent urban setting. It has undergone a £7.9 million redevelopment to extend, refurbish and carry out internal alteration to enhance the existing facilities and make the building more accessible to a wider range of users.

To create a more open and accessible image for the theatre, and to enable it to advertise its function, the main elevation of the five story extension is clad in glass, whilst the remainder is clad in Kemnay granite, the same material as used in the existing theatre.

The project was jointly funded by Aberdeen City Council, a lottery grant from the Scottish Arts Council, Scottish Enterprise Grampian and by private Sponsorship.
